INTRO
This laneway suite strives to leverage the site by creating a strict layer of privacy between the lane and the interior space, while allowing for ample natural light to penetrate the facade. This is achieved through the combination of a feature wall which physically separates the laneway from the private yard, and carefully angled louvers that mitigate direct sightlines from the laneway. Select louvers are rotated to ensure both privacy and desirable views are maintained from the second floor.
The design of the laneway suite addresses the need for more housing within the city of Toronto, while maintaining enough space, privacy, and functionality to support the daily demands of a family home.
DESIGN OBJECTIVES

Behind the garden wall lies a generous greenspace for outdoor leisure, and ample views outward from the main living space. The second floor maintains this connection through carefully curated views through a layer of privacy louvers.
THE OUTCOME
A functional family home emerges from the restrictive building envelope, and a simple 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom second floor is encapsulated within a private shell. An outdoor patio and water feature adjacent to the garden ensures there is ample opportunity for indoor and outdoor recreation space.
CONTEXTUAL IMPACT
The laneway house works within the existing character and function of the laneway, while hinting towards a future that sees these back-of-house, utilitarian spaces as an opportunity for more diverse functions.
